Why We Must Learn Grammar

English is the world’s most wonderful language and has become a force multiplier and unifier. The “universal language” is now used as a means of communication — verbal and non-verbal — in almost all countries, making it absolutely necessary for everyone to gain command of it. If you understand the language well and know how to communicate with it, the whole world opens up for you as an “opportunity”.

For different people, English, as a language, has a different meaning. For a student, it means gateway to better grades and higher education in the country of his choice. For a jobseeker, it means an extra edge. For a working professional, it means an opportunity to climb up the career progression ladder fast. Even if you are not among any of the mentioned above, the language helps you to connect to people around you and stay connected with the rest of the world on social networking sites.

While it is very important that you speak fluently with seamless flow of thoughts and right choice of words, it’s also equally very important to write correctly. To gain mastery in any language, it is imperative to learn it in entirety. Meaning thereby, the written aspect needs to be given an equal importance as the spoken one. Over the years, there has been an increased focus on “Spoken English”. Great! No harm in it. But let’s also not forget the written aspect. You cannot speak and write correctly in any language, unless you know the “heart and soul” of the language which is its “GRAMMAR”.

Just as a country abides by its “Constitution” to function smoothly, a language abides by its GRAMMAR to be effective. And to become an effective and competent communicator, I repeat the word communicator (not just a speaker or writer), a sound knowledge of GRAMMAR is a must.
I know GRAMMAR is the most dreaded fear of many and gives them nightmares. It reminds them of a spectacled teacher writing some “alien concepts” on a blackboard with students looking at him in bewilderment, with little information going into their heads. Such teachers have been largely responsible for dissuading people from learning GRAMMAR and making them presume it to be a very technical subject.

But let me say GRAMMAR is very easy to understand, if taught in an interesting and interactive manner with practical application. So here’s an attempt to make you befriend grammar with simple explanations backed with plenty of examples.
